A quiet home for the animals nobody else could keep.

Surrey Hills Sanctuary is a nonprofit micro-farm and education center on six acres in the Hudson Valley. We give lifelong sanctuary to senior animals and those with special medical needs — farm, companion, and select wild — when they have nowhere else to turn.

Compassionate care, and the education to change how we see animals.

Surrey Hills Sanctuary is a nonprofit (501(c)3) founded in 2013. Located on a 6-acre farm in upstate New York, our mission is to advance animal welfare through compassionate care and impactful education.

We provide lifelong sanctuary for senior animals and those with special medical needs — including farm, companion, and select wild animals — offering them a safe, loving environment when they have nowhere else to turn.

Surrey Hills operates by referral from veterinarians, shelters, and wildlife rehabilitators, prioritizing animals most at risk. While adoption is rare and carefully considered, our primary goal is to provide a permanent, enriching home for animals who need us most.

At the sanctuary
"Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake."
— Martin Luther King Jr.

Small farm, serious care.

We're not trying to be the biggest sanctuary. We're trying to do right by the animals we have, and to teach the people who come see them.

Commitment: once an animal is here, this is their forever home

Every animal here has a story.

Most came to us through a veterinarian, a shelter, or a wildlife rehabilitator — often old, often sick, often the ones who'd run out of options. Here's a look at life on the farm.

Farm Residents

The gentle, the grumpy, the graying

Senior pigs, goats and sheep who needed a soft place to land. They spend their days in real pasture, with real shade, and the medical care most farms can't offer.

Companion Animals

Dogs & cats with complicated histories

Many arrive with chronic conditions or behavioral needs that make adoption unlikely. With time, patience, and the right veterinary team, most of them blossom.

The ones who can't go back

We work with licensed wildlife rehabbers to provide sanctuary to a small number of non-releasable animals — birds and mammals who, for medical reasons, can't survive in the wild.

A note on intake: Surrey Hills does not accept animals from the public. If you have an animal that you need to rehome, please contact your local animal rescue group.

Come meet them — by appointment.

Surrey Hills is a working sanctuary, not a petting zoo. We welcome small groups, school programs, scouts, and quiet visits for adults and families who want to spend a morning with the animals and learn what sanctuary really means.

  1. 01Send us a request with your group size and a few dates that could work.
  2. 02We'll follow up with what's possible and a suggested donation for the visit.
  3. 03Meet the animals, walk the paddocks, and ask everything you want to ask.

Staff also travel to schools, libraries and conferences to lecture on animal welfare. Ask about booking us for your event.
